When LLLT is applied to the skin, light is absorbed by the damaged cells. This in turn triggers a reaction in the mitochondria (the powerhouse of our cells) to produce more energy, stimulating the body’s immune response, and increasing blood supply to the damaged cells, increasing tissue repair, and reducing inflammation, swelling and pain. It targets the underlying condition or pathology to promote healing, which means the results are effective and long lasting. In a nutshell, LLLT assists in the removal of ‘rust’ from our bodies.
Athletes also love the benefits that Low Level Therapy has to offer them. In addition to the benefits outlined above, Low Level Laser Therapy:
LLLT is by no means limited to the above. As it has a positive overall effect on boosting the body’s immune system. The benefits of using LLLT as a part of an integrative approach to maintaining health and wellness cannot be over emphasised!
Laser hair removal. The intensity and power output is high, resulting in the production of heat, which is what creates hair removal. It specifically targets the pigment of the hair follicle, preventing regrowth.
Intense pulse light (IPL) uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths and not a concentrated beam, and as such, is not actually a laser. It works by heating up the layers of the skin and in effect destroying the target tissue. As a result of the ‘injury’, the skin then works on repair and rejuvenation.
As opposed to Low Level Laser Therapy, Surgical Laser uses an intensely hot, precisely focused beam of light to cut and remove tissue.
Although there are no known side effects of Low Level Laser Therapy, if the condition being treated is a chronic one, some individuals may experience a slight increase in their level of discomfort. This is however, a short term response that soon settles, and is due to the increase in blood supply to the affected area, and is in fact a sign that healing is taking place! Low Level Laser Therapy is a non-invasive, fast acting, safe, effective, and drug free treatment method. It has had a history of more than 50 years of use without incident or side effects. Research has shown that it is at least as effective as NSAIDS with no detrimental side effects.*
No, LLLT uses light as opposed to heat to treat the condition.
You may notice an improvement following your very first LLLT treatment. In as few as 4-6 treatments, you will benefit from improved blood circulation, less inflammation and cell revitalisation, enabling the body to start healing, thus effectively treating the underlying cause of the pain, rather than just treating the symptoms. LLLT also has the benefits of having a cumulative effect, with each treatment building on the previous one.
LLLT is fully backed by scientific research. In fact, there are 1000’s of studies available, with new ones being added almost every day!
LLLT is not currently covered by health funds. In certain circumstances it may be included as part of a worker’s comp treatment plan. Please check first with your provider to see if this is possible.
This depends on what is being treated. Sometimes the results are just felt by you. For example, Fibromyalgia sufferers can feel a decrease in pain in their body and also an increase in their energy levels. Sometimes it can both be seen and felt, for example a sprained ankle may have both pain and swelling, both of which LLLT will help to reduce.
LLLT can quickly offer relief for acute conditions. For chronic conditions, 2-3 sessions a week for the first 2-3 weeks may be recommended in order to optimise results. The great thing about LLLT is that it has a cumulative effect. As a result, the time between visits will increase as the condition improves. Following completion of your treatment program, it may (but not always) be necessary to come back in for a quick ‘booster’ session in 3-6 months. Often, once the condition has been resolved, no further treatment is required.
Many individuals are recognising the benefits of having Low Level Laser Therapy as part of an integrative approach to health and wellness. The pressures of day to day life can overtime lead to a build-up of oxidative stress in the body, which is the major cause of inflammation, cell degeneration and the aging process. Low Level Laser Therapy is rapidly gaining recognition as a key therapeutic intervention for reducing oxidative stress.
It is safe to have treatment whilst on medication blood thinners?.
Research has shown that LLLT works well in combination with other treatment methods, such as chiropractic, physiotherapy and massage at reducing and managing pain in the body. One particular study of neck pain sufferers showed that patients found an improvement in both range of motion and reduction in pain by combining both LLLT and chiropractic as opposed to only one or the other.
I have been treating patients at Optimum Health Essentials since June 2014. During this time, I regularly attend seminars conducted by national and internationally accredited leaders in the field of Low Level Laser Therapy. I continue to keep up to date with the latest cutting edge research and treatment outcomes via regular webinars and international laser communities. My other qualifications include a degree majoring in Psychology & Education from the University of Sydney, as well as studies completed in Nutrition.
A session time takes approximately 10-15 minutes to treat one area. For your own comfort, it is a good idea to wear loose fitting clothing. Depending on the area being treatment, you will either be sitting or lying down. In the majority of cases, the laser will be applied directly onto the skin. Treatment is non-invasive and pain free. If more than one area needs to be treated it may be necessary to book a double session.
Each LLLT treatment has a cumulative effect, with each session building on the last one. As a result, your body will continue to respond and promote healing on a cellular level after each treatment has finished. If taking anti-inflammatories it is more beneficial (but not essential) to have treatment prior to taking this medication. Avoid applying creams and lotions prior to treatment. Ideally, allow the body time to rest for about 20-30 minutes following a treatment, after which you can go about your day as normal. Optimum results are best achieved by ensuring that you are well hydrated and have the ideal nutritional support for your condition.
